I’m looking to improve the outside of my property. Can certain landscaping choices increase the risk of termites?

• Mulch: Wood-based mulch retains moisture and contains cellulose, making it a prime termite attractant. When placed directly against exterior walls, it creates a direct pathway into the building.
• Decorative wood features: Timber edging, wooden planters, and railroad ties in contact with soil can provide a food source for termite colonies.
• Irrigation systems: Overwatering or poorly positioned sprinklers can create damp soil conditions that subterranean termites favor.
• Tree stumps and dead wood: Decaying wood near the building is a food source that can support an active colony.
• Dense ground cover: Low-growing plants close to the foundation can trap moisture and limit visibility, making it harder to spot early signs of termites.

Steps to take to reduce the risk of termites

Keep mulch and soil at least 12 inches from your building's foundation; use gravel or stone as an alternative ground cover near exterior walls. Remove dead wood, tree stumps, and wood debris from the property. Fix any irrigation leaks and ensure drainage directs water away from the building.
