Prevention tips
Reducing what attracts wasps to your property is the most practical first step. Keep garbage cans tightly sealed, clean up food and drink spills promptly, and avoid leaving pet food outside. In late spring, inspect your eaves, soffits, fences, and outbuildings for early-stage nests when colonies are still small. Sealing gaps in walls, siding, and foundations can help prevent yellowjackets from establishing nests inside structures.
If you find an active nest, particularly one that's enclosed or underground, it's best not to attempt removal yourself. Disturbing a yellowjacket nest without the right approach can trigger a rapid, aggressive response from hundreds of workers at once.
