Mosquitoes are drawn to specific conditions that support their survival and breeding. The three main attractants include:
1. Standing water
This is the most important factor. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and they don't need much of it. A blocked gutter, a low-lying area of pavement, a decorative pond, or even a discarded container can all support a breeding population. Eliminating standing water is the most effective single step you can take to reduce mosquito numbers on your property.
2. Shade and dense vegetation
Adult mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded, humid areas during the day. Overgrown shrubs, dense ground cover, ivy, and tall grass near the building all provide ideal resting habitat. Properties with mature landscaping or wooded borders tend to have higher mosquito pressure as a result.
3. Warmth and carbon dioxide
Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide and body heat produced by people and animals. Outdoor areas with high foot traffic, such as restaurant terraces, event spaces, and loading areas, can draw mosquitoes in.
Other factors that can increase the need for mosquito control include poor drainage around the building perimeter, irrigation systems that create damp soil conditions, decorative water features without adequate circulation or treatment, and proximity to natural water sources such as ponds, streams, or wetlands.
