What Are Termites?

A small pest with a big appetite!

Termites are considered to be one of the most destructive pests in the world. Termites are insects, which mostly feed on dead plant matter like woodchip, decayed wood (logs), leaf litter and soil. They are sometimes called “white ants” but they are only distantly related to ants.

There are around 50 species of termites in the United States. Termites most commonly found in homes here include:

  • Subterranean termite – found throughout the United States. As their name suggests, they live underground in nests.
  • Damp Wood termite – favor damp conditions and like to live in extreme moisture conditions. These termites enter homes through wood that is in contact with damp soil.
  • Dry Wood termite – found near coastal areas. These termites do not need much moisture to survive.

Why Worry About Termites?

No house is safe when it comes to this pest! The damage they can cause to your home and the misery they can cause to homeowners is never ending. It is estimated that across America termites cause over $5 billion of property damage each year.

Every home is at risk

A termite invasion can happen on any property, though some are more prone than others due to the structure of the property.

FACT: Homeowner insurance DOES NOT cover termite damages

The cost to repair any damage caused by termites is left to the homeowner, and because we know that in most cases this cost can be very high it is worth knowing how to prevent a problem in the first place.

You may already have termites!

Termites are a secretive pest, which can already be on your property without you realizing it. They can be living and working on your property for many months before you spot any sign of their presence – and by that stage they may already have done a lot of damage.

How Do You Get Termites?

Your home offers an attractive feeding site and shelter for termites. Everything from the wood in the structure of your home to the woodchip stored in your yard to your bookshelves is seen as an appealing food source to this insect. In addition your home provides warmth and moisture which can help termites thrive.

Homes in some states are at greater risk than others because of the sheer population of termites naturally located in that area.

If you know your home is located in an area where termites are very active, this is exactly the time to take action to prevent termites or to arrange a termite inspection of your home by a professional pest control company.
