Bed bugs have resurged in recent years with a vengeance. There presence in multi-unit housing and hotels has more to do with frequent travel and our mobile society than the sanitation of a given establishment.

Management of bed bugs relies heavily on early detection and cooperation from management. Early detection includes training housekeeping personnel to recognize the signs of bed bugs. Cooperation from management requires the removal of infested rooms from service and assuring the time needed to adequately treat the infested space.

It is important to note that bed bugs DO NOT transmit disease. In addition, bed bugs closely resemble ticks to the untrained eye. Inspection of the potentially infested space by a professional is necessary to properly evaluate the infestation and verify the presence of bed bugs.

Treatments vary depending on the severity of the bed bug problem. Some treatment measures include the use of heat, liquid insecticides, and possibly fumigation.

Today, bed bugs are as big of a problem as they have ever been. Modern cities like Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Memphis and other large urban areas have become hotbeds of bed bug infestations due to so many travelers and citizens in close proximity to each other.

It is important to realize that elimination of bed bugs is a difficult process and requires extensive time and effort.
