Geographical Locale
Most prevalent in southern Georgia and Florida, found in dry, open areas that are bushy but not heavily vegetated.
Also found in sandy areas in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Appearance
50-80 cm long.
Pattern on the body consists of wide, alternate rings of red and black, separated by narrower yellow rings. The red rings are speckled with black.
Tail has black and yellow rings - no red rings.
Black head.
Venom
These snakes are generally reclusive, so only prone to bite if stepped on or handled.
The bite is venomous. If bitten, seek immediate medical attention.
Lifecycle
Between 3-12 eggs are laid in early summer.
Eggs hatch in late summer or early fall.
Baby snakes approx 18cm long.
Lifespan in the wild is unknown.
Habits
Preferred habitats are pine and scrub oak sandhills and pine flatwoods that undergo seasonal flooding.
They usually stay underground or under leaf piles although are occasionally seen in the open.
Feed on small snakes and lizards.
