Common pests in retail stores
Pests in retail settings don’t just create a bad impression; they can damage products, trigger customer complaints, and lead to health or safety concerns. Whether it’s the sales floor, stockroom, or break area, different pests are drawn to different parts of the store.
Rodents and stored product pests
Rodents like mice and rats are known for squeezing through small openings and hiding in quiet spaces, especially near food storage or delivery areas. They can chew through packaging, contaminate products, and damage wires or fixtures.
Stored product pest infestations—which include beetles, moths, and weevils—can infest dry goods like grains, flour, and pet food. These pests are often brought in through shipments and can be hard to detect until damage is already done. Regular inspections and proper storage help reduce the risk, but once these pests are inside, retail pest control services are usually needed to fully remove them.
Flies, cockroaches, and ants
Flies are drawn to trash, drains, and uncovered food. They can quickly spread bacteria and are often found near produce displays, breakrooms, or restrooms. Cockroaches thrive in dark, damp areas and are commonly found behind equipment or inside wall voids. They’re known for spreading germs and are tough to remove without a targeted treatment plan.
Ants may seem less worrying, but they can still contaminate surfaces and become a recurring issue once a trail is established. They’re especially active near sugary or greasy food items. Spotting even a few ants indoors can be a sign of a larger problem nearby.
