Rabbits may look gentle, but they can create real challenges for homes and businesses. They breed fast, feed on soft vegetation, and often dig wide burrow systems. When numbers grow, they can damage lawns, crops, and structures.

What are rabbits?

Rabbits are small, fast-moving mammals known for their long ears, strong hind legs, and quick breeding cycle. They live in groups, feed mainly on grass, and dig burrows for shelter. While they look harmless, rabbits can become pests when they damage lawns, crops, and landscaped areas.

If you have rabbit activity around your home, our domestic pest control service can help you take the right steps to reduce damage and prevent future issues.

Rabbit characteristics

Rabbits are built for speed and stealth, with a few key traits that help them survive in the wild:

  • They are typically 17.5 inches  in length.
  • They usually weigh between 1.5  and2kg
  • They have elongated hind legs and long ears.
  • Their hind legs allow speeds up to 25–30 mph
  •  Their fur can blend into the surrounding vegetation to provide natural camouflage

Habitat, diet, life cycle, and behaviors

Rabbits can settle in many places, from farms to parks to suburban yards. Understanding where they live, what they eat, and how they reproduce can help manage activity.

Rabbits are often found in grassland, hedgerows, meadows, and loose soil for digging.  They build burrow systems called warrens, which may expand over time. In towns and cities, they can settle near gardens, landscaped beds, or open spaces where food and shelter are readily available.

Rabbits mainly feed on grass, along with leaves, buds, bark, and crops. Their steady grazing can damage lawns and young plants. They return to familiar feeding spots, which makes their impact more noticeable over time.

Rabbits have a fast and frequent breeding cycle that helps maintain their population in the wild.

  • They typically breed from January – August.
  • Their gestation period is around four weeks
  • They can have two to four litters per annum.
  • They tend to have three to six young per litter.
  • May conceive two days after giving birth.

Rabbits stay close to cover and usually feed during low-light hours. They dig to create shelter and may form large burrow networks. Juveniles can travel up to four km after the breeding season. As populations rise, so does the risk of ground damage and crop loss. In some regions, rabbit damage is estimated at £100 million per year.

Signs of rabbit activity

Look for clipped grass, small round droppings, and fresh soil around burrow entrances. You may also see narrow tracks through the grass.

If these signs persist or worsen, it may be time to consider our animal removal solutions.

Frequently asked questions

For rabbits living in the wild, predators are the main cause of death. Disease and harsh weather also play a major role.

Not in the wild. Rabbits living outdoors as pests rarely survive more than a few years due to predators, disease, and exposure. Lifespans of 20 years apply only to a small number of domestic pets under veterinary care.
